When SEM was gaining ground, most users use SEM and PPC interchangeably. While SEM means Search Engine Marketing, PPC on the other hand, means Pay Per Click. Payment and bidding on SEM was literally done through PPC then.

These days, there are many ways bidding can be done and be paid. We now have terms like CPA, Click Per Action, CPI, Click Per Impressions and more.
